... Jesus grew in wisdom (mental)
and stature (physical) and in favor with
God (spiritual) and man (social). Luke
2:52 NIV
Albert Einstein told us that
the faster an object travels, the slower
time passes. Now, I'm not Einstein (although
I like the hair), and I'm not running
that fast these days, but time sure
is going by slowly. That happens for
me when I aspire to future personal
improvement.
Do you meticulously log each
run like I do? I have a monthly
compilation page in my running log that
when full will hold thirty years of
monthly and yearly totals. I can see
all twenty-one of my January totals at
a glance. Usually January mileage is
dismal and infrequent. This year it
was not. I will take some of the
blame for the eighteen runs I went
on this January. But part of the
blame goes to Pat Nath. His starting
the Saturday group run caused my January
total to go up by a couple runs.
I enjoy the mental acuity that
accompanies physical exertion and the spiritual
awareness in the social setting of running
with friends.
Walter shares some of the
blame for my seventy-six miles in January
by his meticulous attention to the
Grand Prix totals. That increases my
daily miles and participation in Fun
Runs. Perhaps you can also blame them
for your successful increases.
Many runners exceed my monthly
mileage. Many have more total runs per
month than I. If that is you,
good for you! I find myself expecting
twenty runs in February and totaling
85 miles, God willing. No matter where
each of us find ourselves today, as
long as we desire mental, physical, spiritual,
and social growth we can gratefully aspire
to future improvement.
