History

Scott City, Kansas, USA

Scott City was originally known as Scott Center as it is located at the very center of Scott County. It is also located equal distances between the states of Oklahoma and Nebraska and a scant sixty miles east from the state of Colorado. Scott County abounds with history, some in the form of fossils from prehistoric times, the first building in Kansas, a pueblo was erected about the time of Columbus, and the last battle in Kansas between the U.S. Cavalry and Indians in which an officer was killed occurred here.

Camping and recreation vehicle facilities were offered at Scott Lake State Park which allows one to fish, boat, hike, and view the outcroppings of the Oglalla, the storage tank for water on these high plains. Wild game abounds with pheasants, turkeys, jack rabbits and deer. Native Bison also known as Buffalo are viewable at the park, but hundreds can be seen in a feedyard with only a few feet between them and yourself. Thousands of cattle are fed in this county and you are welcome to view them.

The lush green fields of wheat in spring turn gold for harvest in early summer. Grain sorghum (milo) and corn supply the green for summer. When cool weather comes there is the chance for seeing morning mirages where distance farms show up above the horizon and at night the beautiful light mirages leap up light on light.

Scott City offers a progressive business district with lots of restaurants and eating establishments to suit every taste and quest for décor. A hospital that is in the top one hundred nation wide offers excellent medical services. The schools offer an education of excellence and sports programs abound. Facilities for group gatherings can accommodate most any group. Golf, tennis, swimming, baseball facilities exist for all to use. Our many churches may easily accommodate religious preferences.

For bikers, local businesses offer great accommodations. Scott City offers all a friendly welcome.
