- Material on my first ship USS FORRESTAL
(CVA-59) Still in the works.
- Material on YP674- the only craft I
commanded in the Navy. Well, sort of; I "commanded" under the
supervision of some very salty officers! I still remember the obscene
remark one old Warrant Officer made when he saw me standing watch at the
helm for the first time...
I am curious which class of boat YP674
belongs to since I'd like to be able to put this this information on a
web page. That way, I can enlighten the kids in my extended family and
maybe a few other readers. The problem is that it has been nearly
impossible to find this information. If you want to read a tale of
frustration with
red tape, read this!
- On the left column is a picture of Pope John Paul II, taken in
1981. The statue is intended to rotate with a 24 hour period so that His
Holiness will bless every part of Guam once a day. (His Holiness visited
Guam in 1980.) The statue is made of bronze with a bronze motor that is
supposed to keep working for a very long time in spite of the humidity
and mold on Guam. The motor seized up within two (2) years. Maintenance
of this statue was supposed to done without funds from GovGuam
(Government of Guam) by the local people. GovGuam had to pay for the
initial repairs as the locals could not collect enough cash. The last I
heard (around 1993), the statue had quit turning as the motor had
totally seized up; the "weather proof motor" was overcome by the
conditions on Guam...
