Hi SWK CattleWomen!

Just an update:  Members have been busy creating an all Beef recipes cookbook.  It looks great and has lots of tips as well as great recipes.  They are almost totally assembled and will be available during Beef Empire Days for you to pick up and take home to sell or buy and use as gifts.  I think they would make great bridal shower or wedding gifts.  You could event stick in a gift certificate for beef purchases at local meat markets and it would be a super gift for newly weds.  I also think feedlot managers might like a few to have around to give out to customer’s wives or their own or to secretaries, etc.  We found men were just as interested in beef recipes as women when we had them on display at the Kansas Sampler.  See Angie Price, Elisa Stone, or Mary Beth Woods or stop by The Corner On Main (Kay Lee and Michelle Mayo are both SWKCW members) in Garden City during Beef Empire Days to get your 5 to sell so that we don’t have to use our limited funds for postage.  Thanks for your help!

Beef Promotions:  So far this year, we have conducted three successful beef promotions.

*   The first was just before Easter promoting the flat iron steak which comes from the top shoulder of the chuck. It is a cut known to be lean and tasteful.  It is great for making fajitas and wraps.  We cooked and served samples at each of the two Dillon’s stores in Garden City and Becky Jones did such a great job that the store she was in sold completely out of the flat iron steak.  Big thanks to Becky, Janie Welsh, Brenda Reeve, Jennifer Mongeau, Larry Jones, and Lori Carter.

*   On May 5-6th Cattlewomen and Beef Empire Days board members promoted beef at the Kansas Sampler.  We had our new all beef cookbook for sale and also handed out lots of recipes provided by the Kansas Beef Council.

*   On May 19th we promoted beef at the White’s Foodliner in Cimarron, Kansas.  Over 460 burgers were cooked and sold for a $1.00 between 11:00 and 1:00p.m.  Between having high school graduation, city-side garage sales, and great advertising on the Q97FM radio station by “Bobby Wild”, the word spread quickly around the town that there were some great tasting burgers at bargain prices to be had at the Foodliner grocery store.  This event was coordinated by the Kansas Beef Council and took place at least 8 grocery stores across Kansas.  Over 650 hamburgers were sold in Ellsworth, Kansas!  A big thanks to Mark and Sonya Clark, Kathy Miller, and Jan McNiece from Cimarron, Becky Gigot and Elisa Stone from Garden City.  We had a great time and I would highly recommend each of you to jump in and participate when the next opportunity arises.  It only takes a little time and feels great to know you’ve helped promote beef in a small way.

In just one week Beef Empire Days begins and so do some of our most fun and rewarding activities.

Reminder of the many coming events that we hope you can take advantage of…

Thanks for all you do to promote beef!  Angie Price (275-2679)

FEBRUARY 2007 NEWSLETTER

 Officer’s Meeting

We had a great officer’s meeting at Angie Price’s home on January 30!  We have so many exciting things going on, we have decided to send out a newsletter this month to inform everyone of all the excitement!  Those who have provided us with email addresses will receive this by email instead of snail mail, due to paper, printing and postage expenses.  If you received this by regular mail and would rather receive it by email, please contact us with your email address.  Every little bit of savings helps!

Scholarship Fundraiser

We have decided to do a Beef Cookbook this year for our scholarship fundraiser, but we need your help!  We would love to receive your favorite beef recipes!  The cookbook will be designed in sections – Appetizers, Beef Jerky, Chuckwagon’s in the Park recipes, Marinades and Rubs, and Main Dishes.  The main dish section will be sub categorized into cuts of meats such as ground beef, roast, steak, ribs/brisket, etc.  Along with each sub category, we will include educational information on that particular cut of meat.  Our goal is to include 250 recipes.  Elisa Stone will be working on the layout of the book and Mary Beth Woods has graciously volunteered to type all the recipes.  When sending your recipes, it would help if you could type your recipes and email them to her.  Then, she would only have to adjust the font and size.  However, if you’d rather send a paper copy in the mail that will work also.  We would like to receive five to ten recipes from each member if possible.

We are also including in the cookbook livestock brands from our SWKCW!  What a great way to show off your brand!  Elisa Stone has a Kansas Brand book.  If your brand is included in that book and you’d like to see it in the cookbook, please let her know.  If you would like your brand to be included and it is not in the brand book, please mail those copies to:
Elisa Stone
10025 S. Sandhill Rd.
Garden City, KS  67846
620-276-6355

We would like to receive all recipes by March 1st.  We will begin selling by May 1st at the Kansas Sampler.

We are really excited about this project and look forward to receiving everyone’s delicious recipes!  Please email to mbclaws@hotmail.com or mail to:

Membership Dues

Just a reminder, if you haven’t sent in your membership dues, please do so.  I have attached a membership form for your convenience.  We currently have 24 paid members, of which only 11 are active.  WE NEED YOU!!!  No matter how small the effort, it just takes a little effort from everyone to make big things happen.  Our membership dues go directly toward the $1000.00 scholarship we give every year, and we all know how important it is to support our youth.  We will be selling the

cookbooks this year to help that cause.  However, we have several members who mail their memberships and choose not to be active, but want to help financially by paying their membership.  If you are too busy to sell cookbooks, but would love to help our youth, we will be accepting donations towards the scholarship fund.  Please mail those donations to our treasurer:  Amy Turner, Rt. 1 Box 60A, Kismet, KS 67859.  We appreciate all your support!
