The school FFA year is drawing to a close, all the district CDE’s (Career Development Events) are done and the district banquet has been held, but this FFA chapter isn’t stopping anytime soon. The state convention is coming up at the end of May and chapter officer elections are on the way. Several FFA members will also continue their FFA experience through their jobs and livestock this summer as SAEs (Supervised Agricultural Experiences). But before school gets out and summer fun begins, let’s review the recent FFA activities members have participated in. One of the biggest events the FFA has participated in recently was the district banquet held on April 28th. The banquet was put on by the 2007-2008 Southwest District Officers, including Melissa Conway as secretary, and Ashlea Wolking as treasurer. Ashlea Wolking said, “The set-up for the banquet was a lot of work, but we got it finished.” Before the banquet, Nick Herrmann, Jarvis Jarnigan, Ashlea Wolking, and Melissa Conway all ran as district officer candidates and had interviews with the district advisors. In these interviews, the FFA members were asked questions and gave speeches about why they would be good district officers. The banquet itself featured award presentations to successful FFA members in the district, a speech by the State Reporter, Drew Goering, and 2008 district officer elections. Andrew Unruh and Kolton Smith both participated in the banquet as voting delegates for the district officers. Overall, the banquet was very successful and Ashlea Wolking and Melissa Conway were reelected as officers. Melissa Conway was elected Vice-President and Ashlea Wolking was elected Secretary of the Southwest District. At the end of May, Ashlea Wolking, Nick Herrmann, and Melissa Conway will go to the state convention in Manhattan, Kansas. Ashlea Wolking and Melissa Conway will register chapters for the convention and will vote for the upcoming state officers as state delegates. Melissa Conway will also compete in the state public speaking division, and Nick Herrmann will compete in the extemporaneous speaking division. Mr. Burch has been looking forward to the state convention and, “has high hopes for the Holcomb speakers who will be participating in the state competition.” This summer will definitely continue to keep FFA members busy. |
