5th Grade Communications

Schedule

Welcome to 5th Grade! This is my 18th year at Holcomb. This is my 5th year in 5th grade and I've taught 2nd grade at Holcomb for 13 years. I am excited to be a part of Team Learning!

What is Team Learning?

Team Learning is made up of three teachers teaching specific academic areas. This allows teachers to share individual strengths, skills and experiences with the other team members. Students benefit from receiving instruction from more than one teacher. Team Learning promotes uninterrupted instruction in critical subject areas, allows for a more productive classroom environment, more opportunities for using various interactive teaching methods, accommodates different learning styles, promotes interaction among the students, and helps transition students into Middle School.

The Team Learning Teachers Are:

Science and Social Studies: Pam Foster

Reading: Tammy Wallace

Math: Deana Novack

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of the 5th Grade Team Learning Teachers.

 Reading

We will be reading various pieces of literature. Some of this will include basal readers, novels, newspapers, fiction and non-fiction books, poetry and a variety of other genres. Many reading skills will be practiced and reviewed throughout the year. Character, setting, plot, problem and solution, context clues, vocabulary, main idea and detail are a few skills we will focus on. The students will be using various Thinking Maps and other tools to help reinforce their reading skills.  We will also focus on State Assessments and work to learn about the four text types 1. Narrative, 2.  Expository, 3.  Technical and 4. Persuasive.  Students will work on text structure and text features.

A complete checklist for 5th grade can be seen by going to: http://www.swprsc.org

Accelerated Reading: It is recommended by the Accelerated Reader Company that each child spend ONE HOUR daily being read To, reading With, or reading Independently. (TWI) I will meet with each student and discuss each individual's reading progress and certification levels. We encourage the children to read other books  Reading is IMPORTANT and to become a better reader it takes PRACTICE!   Please provide 15 to 30 minutes at home each night for your child to read! Become interested and ask questions about what he/she is reading.

Procedures:

Give Me 5

This procedure will occur during line up and any time the teacher needs the students to become quiet and listen. The teacher will begin with "Give me five." The students will respond with "1, 2, 3, 4, 5." At the end of the count down the students should be facing the speaker, hands free, silent, and ready to listen.

Attitude

At the end of class the signal from the teacher will be "Attitude Is." The student response is "a little thing that makes a big difference." The students may then leave the classroom.

Passes and Signatures

Students are welcome to leave the class at appropriate times if necessary. They need to wait until I am finished talking (unless it is an emergency) and take the pass or sign out to the appropriate destinations. (Library, computer lab etc.) This is important so that I know the whereabouts of the students at all times.

Positive Consequences Negative Consequences

*Separation from classmates *Loss of recess, or extra activities

*Positive words and pats on the back! *Visit to the Principal's Office

*A GREAT school year! *Call to parents

Team Agendas: The agenda is for the student's benefit. Each student should USE it!

*Each class period students need to write down ALL assignments and HI-LIGHT those that need to be finished at home for homework!

*After students have finished ALL homework.   We do not require you to sign the agenda each day, but encourage you to check your child's agenda to be aware of homework that is due or upcoming events!

*Agendas need to be brought to EVERY class, EVERY day!

Homework Policy:

*All homework should be turned in the within two days of being absent,  unless the teacher notes otherwise

*Homework not handed in on time will result in a  zero for the students grade.

*Partial completed work will be graded on a normal scale.

*If you know that you (your child) will be absent, please call the school so that homework can be gathered up and sent home with a sibling, or picked up by the parent.
