Opening Activities 8:15- 8:50

During the first 35 minutes of the morning the students have several things they work on. As they come in the classroom there is a flow map on the chalkboard. The students fill out their agendas, work on DLR, do a little handwriting practice, use the dictionary for the daily vocabulary word and work on their journal assignment for the day.  This is a self-paced, but busy time of the day.

Math 8:50 – 10:05

We work from our textbook daily and also do ADD (arithmetic done daily), timed tests, ACE (assessment conditioning exercises), and spiral reviews. We also build BIG MACS during the year with our multiplication facts.

Spelling 10:10 – 10:35

The students take a spelling pre-test on Monday. We do several spelling activities during the week, with a post test on Friday. Rainbow spell, 7 times each, sentences and Sparkle are some of our spelling activities.

AR 10:35 – 11:10

During AR, (accelerated reading time), the children read silently to themselves from their chosen library books.

Reading 1:20 – 2:15

We have a new Reading Basal in 4th grade we will be using. We also plan to read a few novels this year, such as Charlotte’s Web and Shiloh.

Each student practices writing everyday in their journals. Also, our 6-trait writing involves larger writing assignments.

Social Studies 2:20 – 3:10  Graphical image of the Kansas State Flag

The exciting part of 4th grade Social Studies is that we learn all 50 states and capitals by region. Flashcards and maps help with this process.

Science 2:20 – 3:10

In science we learn to classify objects, do simple investigations and explore with magnets. We also grow plants and learn about rocks and minerals, weather and lifecycles.
