Visual Phonics

Visual Phonics is a system of 46 hand cues and corresponding written symbols to facilitate development of speech as well as reading skills. These cues are used in conjunction with spoken language and represent individual sounds. The hand cues selected for Visual Phonics are in some ways suggestive of how the sounds are produced. Visual Phonics helps make a phonics approach accessible and provides another way to support literacy development.

Visual Phonics/See the Sound is now being used with preschool-age through 1st Grade students at Wiley Elementary. It is showing great promise in helping these students approach the reading process. Preliminary observations have been encouraging regarding the benefits of this system.  Students are making the connection between:

 

 

 

Handwriting 

 Daily practice will improve handwriting. We will be using pencils, markers, color markers, smelly markers, pens, gel pens, chalk, and colored pencils…anything to show the importance and fun of learning to write. Just learning to use the pencil sharpener is an adventure for a kindergartenerJ

Take Home Sight Word Readers

Reading At Home is the Number One indicator for your child's success at school.

After reading to or with your child please remember to fill out the Home Reading Connection  papers and return to school for documentation and a reward! Several students have earned stickers on their charts and a toy from the reward basket. Your home reading paper also gets a free PIZZA coupon from the Pizza Hut for the Book It Program beginning in October.

 Students will be recognized for the Number Totals they have completed at the end of the year assembly.

 

COMPUTER LAB

Kindergarteners are lucky to go to the Computer Lab twice a week! Mrs. Hebrlee has many awesome programs that we are excited to learn more about We also have three classroom computers available during our Center time. Students are provided an opportunity once a week to choose a program. Some of the favorite choices are: School Zone; Between the Lions; Starfall, ChickaChicka, PBS Kids.
