Eligibility

ELIGIBILITY

According to the Kansas State High School Activities Association a student must pass five (5) subjects in order to participate in interscholastic competition for the next semester.  If a  students fails to pass 5 subjects they will be ineligible for the next semester.

As well, Holcomb High School has the following weekly eligibility standards:

Activity and Athletic Participation Eligibility:  Eligibility for participation in all school sponsored activities for HHS students will be determined on a weekly basis.

  1. Eligibility begins after a two-week “grace” period at the beginning of each semester.
  2. Eligibility reports will be issued using the current semester grade.
  3. Any student who has two (2) F’s (a failing grade), or two (2) consecutive weekly failing grades in any one class, will become INELIGIBLE for that week’s athletic events as well as any school sponsored activities (this includes club activities, school dances, prom, field trips, etc.)
  4. School sponsored activities that directly affect the performance of a student’s grade in that class will be considered separately with approval from the principal. (ex. band/choir concert).
  5. This ineligibility will be in affect from Monday to Monday (or the first day of any week where Monday is a holiday).  The eligibility reports will be generated on Monday morning after 8:00 am and will be placed in all teacher’s / coach’s / sponsor’s mailboxes.
  6. It will then be the teacher’s / coach’s / sponsor’s responsibility to inform the ineligible student that day of their status for that week.

Ineligible status will not change until the following Monday even if new grades are entered that week by a teacher to make the student eligible.

If a student is on the ineligible list he or she will have to attend At-Risk tutoring during Homeroom and lunch time.  Here are some guidelines that should be followed:

  • A letter will be sent home to the parents stating that their son or daughter is failing a class(es).
  • Homeroom teacher will inform the student that they are failing Monday during Homeroom.  The student should be sent to room 119.
  • The student will eat lunch at 12:00 on Monday.
  • The rest of the week the student will not check into Homeroom.  They will go directly to lunch and then to room 119.
  • If a teacher needs to see a student please email Mrs. Hopson.  She will have a pass to send with the student.
  • The student will be given 3 minutes to get to the class that they are going to.  Please monitor this!
  • The point of At-Risk Tutoring is to help those students than need extra help and hopefully get them off the failing list.
