Eric Boldt – Published November 6, 2008

Word has been received of the death of Earl Edward Boldt. Mr. Boldt passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses at the age of 94.

He was born March 11, 1914 south of Belmont, the son of Herman F. Boldt and the former Martha Pagenkopf.

As a youth, he worked on the family farm and after his father’s death, for several summers with his uncles near Bushton. He attended school in Belmont, graduating from Belmont High School in 1932.

Earl worked his way through Southwestern College in Winfield, graduating cum laude in 1936 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and History. He began his teaching career in Leon, followed by stints in his hometown of Belmont; in Cullison; and in Hill City. He taught any or all of the high school social studies courses offered in those schools while coaching any or all of the sports offered.

May 20, 1939, Earl married Dorothy McClaren of Lewis. A son, Gary came to bless this union July 13, 1941.

In 1947 Mr. Boldt became a full-time farmer, and the family moved to Ulysses where his father-in-law owned farm ground and where his daughter Chari was born May 21, 1947.

Mr. Boldt was actively involved with the Ulysses community being a charter member of the Lions Club and receiving his 55 years of service chevron in 2007; he served on the Ulysses Grade School education board; elected director of the Grant County Rural High School education board in 1958 serving until county unification in 1966; and was an elected member of the board of directors of the Ulysses Cooperative Oil and Supply Co. until 1986.

Earl and his wife continued to follow high school activities, particularly athletics and in 1989 were named Big Orange Boosters of the Year and awarded lifetime passes to USD 214 activities.

In 1979 Ear was one of those farmers driving his tractor from Ulysses to Washington D.C. in the American Agriculture Movement National Tractorcade for a more just farm policy and in 1983 he received the Ulysses Chamber of Commerce’s Farm Family of the Year award.

Mr. Boldt was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses.

Survivors include his son Gary of Ulysses; daughter Chari Shoemake and husband Tom of Overland Park; two grandchildren, Ryan and Kari Shoemake; sister-in-law Norma Gatterman; niece Paula Stein; and two nephews, Bryan and Bruce Gatterman.

Preceding Mr. Boldt in death were his parents; wife Dorothy August 12, 2002; and his sister, Mildred Stucky.

Services were attended Friday afternoon, October 31, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Interment followed at the Ulysses Cemetery under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Ulysses.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Grant County Scholarship Fund or the Ulysses Lions Club sight fund all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, Ks 67880.

Myron Greenwood – Published November 6, 2008

Former Stevens County resident Myron H. Greenwood passed from this life peacefully at home Friday, October 24, 2008 after a four year battle with cancer.

Born in Colorado Springs, Co. April 9, 1934, he was the son of Georgia and Mack Greenwood. He was the seventh of nine children.

He spent his youth working with his family on their wheat farm near Hugoton and their cattle ranches in Black Forest, Coaldale and Custer County, Co. He attended Canon City Schools graduating in 1952.

While in high school, he excelled in football, receiving all state honors his senior year. Myron received a letter of intent to play football at Missouri State University, but instead chose to serve in the United States Air Force where he served as an airman 1st class chief jet mechanic.

Mr. Greenwood worked for he Colorado Department of Corrections, where he spent 22 years as the recreation captain at Fremont Corrections Facility and retired after 33 years, April 30, 1993.

Myron was a lifetime member of the Canon City Elks Lodge 610 and a life member of the Disabled American Veteran Silver State No. 13. He was an avid longtime Bronco fan. (win or lose)

May 24, 1958, Myron married his high school sweetheart Joy Phillips.

Mr. Greenwood enjoyed being with his grandchildren, swimming, horseback riding, walking, spending time in the mountains and skiing.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Joy; his son Michael of Fountain, Co.; daughters Kim Beicker and husband James and Kelly Greenwood all of Canon City; four grandchildren, Tiffany and Lilli Rose Greenwood, Dalton Beicker and Devon Sporcich; sisters Maxine Lautaret of Kalispell, Mt., Vera Lawry and Cleora Nordyke both of Hugoton, Loretta Caccitore of Colorado Springs; his brother Milton Greenwood and wife Kathy of Nampa, Id.; sisters-in-law Carol Greenwood of Colorado Springs, Charlotte Osborn and Virginia Phillips all of Canon City and Jean Phillips of Westminster, Co. and numerous other family members.

At his request, no services will be scheduled. Cremation was handled through the Holt Family Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Myron’s name to the Orchard of Hope Foundation, 111 Orchard Ave., Canon City, Co. 81211.

David “Sam” Lord – Published November 6, 2008

Death has claimed the life of David John “Sam” Lord of Dodge City. Mr. Lord, a former longtime Satanta and Moscow resident, passed away Wednesday evening, October 22, 2008 at Western Plains Medical Complex n Dodge City at the age of 47.

The son of Joseph H. Lord and Mary Jackson, he was born June 8, 1961 in La Puente, Ca. He moved from Illinois to this area in 1980.

Sam was a mechanic. He spent most holidays with his extended family who he enjoyed being with.

Survivors include his father and step mother, Joseph H. Lord, Sr. and wife Judy of Tilton, Il.; his son Timothy Lord of LaFayette, In.; four brothers, George Lord and James Lord both of Illinois, Joseph Lord, Jr. of North Carolina and Michael Lord of California; one sister, Teresa Lord of California; and his extended family, Kathy and Rowdy Hill and family and Randy and Patricia Parrish and family; and other friends.

Graveside services were attended Saturday, October 25, 2008 at the Haskell County Cemetery with Minister Randy Dirrim presiding. Haskell County Funeral Home of Sublette was in charge of the arrangements.

Leonard Hill, Jr. – Published November 6, 2008

The death of Leonard Hill, Jr. has been learned. Mr. Hill passed away Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses. He was 82.

He was born December 1, 1925 in Carthage, Mo., the son of Leonard Hill and the former Veda Belle Baker.

Leonard moved to Ulysses when he was 16. He served in the Army during the Korean War. As a youth, he worked for Max Ainsworth. Leonard also worked at their theatre in the 1950’s for Bo Crocker and at the Firestone Store. He was a carpenter and also started a fire extinguisher business in Ulysses.

Mr. Hill was an under sheriff, past Fire Chief and started the first EMT’s in Grant County. He was an activity bus driver, foreman on the Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church building and a State Commander in the American Legion. He was a member of the Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79.

June 9, 1946, Leonard and Norma Mitchell were married in Ulysses.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Susan Lynn Britton and husband Roger of Dodge City, Barbara Lee Lancaster and husband Dean of Sterling, Mary Jo Dimitt and husband Terry of Ulysses and Terri Ann Scott and husband Dennis of Katy, Tx.; two brothers, Robert Hill of Sterling and Max Hill of Carthage, Mo.; two sisters, Maurine Huron of Web City, Mo. and Bonnie Dingman of Carthage; his 14 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.

Mr. Hill is preceded in death by his parents and sister Helen Chester.

Services were attended Tuesday morning, November 4, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Rev. Wayne Flanders and Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Interment followed in the Ulysses Cemetery with military rites performed by the Dexter D.. Harbour Post #79.

Kenneth Patterson – Published November 6, 2008

Friends and family members gathered to remember Kenneth Patterson, Sr. who passed from this life Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses. He was 97.

He was born September 6, 1911 at Bucklin, the son of C.F. Patterson and the former Emmaline Lingwood.

Kenneth, a carpenter and a farmer, graduated from Grant County Rural High School in 1929. He owned Hickok Community Grocery store and was a former City of Ulysses councilman. He also worked for High Plains Lumber.

Mr. Patterson was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge and a current member of the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses.

May 13, 1934, Kenneth married Edith Penka in Ulysses. She preceded him in death March 8, 2008. His parents; sister Irene Lance; granddaughter Alice Marie Hook; and two great grandchildren, Julie Ann Brooks and Franklin Rice also preceded him in death.

Survivors include his son Kenneth Patterson, Jr. and wife Joann of Ulysses; four grandchildren, Norman Patterson, Joe Bob Patterson, Tami Chandler and Leanne Moore; ten great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Rev. Wayne Flanders and Rev. Bill Harrold led the services for Mr. Patterson Tuesday afternoon, November 4, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Ulysses. Interment followed in the Ulysses Cemetery under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Ulysses.

Greta Mitchell – Published November 6, 2008

Lifelong Stanton County resident Greta Louise Mitchell passed from this life Friday, October 31, 2008 at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson at the age of 70.

She was born March 7, 1938 in Ulysses, the daughter of Stanley A. Julian and the former Margaret I. Reigle.

Greta graduated from Johnson High School and received her Masters degree in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University. She taught school in Garden City, Big Bow and Johnson and was a devoted wife, mother and friend.

August 2, 1963, Greta married Dwight L. Mitchell at the First Baptist Church in Hays. He preceded her in death October 30, 1994. Her father; brother Theodore J. Julian; and nephew Basil D. Julian also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Wesleyan Women, Come-Double Club and Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church Board. She enjoyed music, reading, sewing, traveling, movies, camping and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her mother Margaret Julian of Johnson; son Al Collingwood and wife Polly of Johnson; daughter Lori Mitchell-Kandt and husband Karl of Herington; sister-in-law, Ella Mae Julian of Johnson; aunt Virginia Garey of Johnson; and four grandchildren, Alia, Anne, Ellen and Owen.

Services were attended Monday afternoon, November 3, 2008 at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church in Johnson with Rev. Dave Kaufmann presiding. Burial was in the Stanton County Cemetery of Johnson under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Johnson.

Memorials may be given to the Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Stanton County Hospital or the Stanton County Scholarship Foundation all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 715, Johnson, Ks. 67855.

Sandra Whissenand – Published November 6, 2008

The death of Sandra Charlene (Boyd) Rowden Whisennand of Helena, Ok. has been learned. Sandra passed from this life at her home at the age of 48.

She was born July 17, 1960 at Oklahoma City, Ok. to Luther Boyd and the former Patricia Patterson. The first 13 years of her life were spent in Vian, Ok., then she attended high school in Hugoton.

Sandra met and married Jon Rowden of Hugoton and one daughter, Misty Dawn Rowden Cumpton came to bless this union.

She later married Ralph “Casey” Whisennand of Forgan, Ok. and to this union was born Adra and Bonnie Jean. She spent the remaining years of her life in and around Enid, Ok.

Those preceding Sandra in death were, her father; her maternal grandparents Wess Patterson and Flossie “Granny Jo” Young; paternal grandparents Dr. John Mitchell “Doc” Boyd and Mary Alice Cobb; one brother, Luther Clive Boyd; cousin Leah Joanne Whitworth McLeish; and great uncle William “Hopalong Cassidy” Boyd.

Survivors include three daughters, Misty Cumpton and husband Alan of Vian, Adra Notarianni and husband Tony and Bonnie Whisennand of Linesville, Pa.; her mother and step father Patricia and Allen Sweigart of Chanute; step grandmother Patricia Browning of Annville, Pa.; four sisters and their husbands, Rev. Reggie Kelly and wife Emma, Rev. Ray Phillips and wife Vivian and Johnny Armer and wife Sharon, all of Vian and Tammy Free of Cherokee, Ok.; three brothers, Wayne Boyd and wife Jenna and Darrell Boyd and wife Tina all of Enid, Ok. and David Boyd and friend Tracy Pipeliu of Lahoma, Ok.; her six grandchildren, Elisha Minter of Oak Harbor, Wa., Hannah Sylestine of Enid, Nicholas, Vincent and Casey Ann Notarianni and Natalie Whisennand of Linesville; aunt and uncle, Mary and Calvin Whitworth of Springfield Mo.; a special cousin, Barbara Williams and husband Matthew of Battlefield Mo.; numerous other cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives; and her host of dear friends.

Graveside services were attended Friday afternoon, October 24, 2008 in The Garden of Memories with Rev. Ray Phillips and Rev. Reggie Kelly officiating. Lanman Funeral Home of Helena, Ok. was in charge of the arrangements.

Elizaeth Gauger – Published November 13, 2008

Word has been received of the death of Elizabeth Mae “Liz” Gauger. Mrs. Gauger passed from this life Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Ia. following a short illness.

Liz was born March 22, 1954 in Hugoton to Dean and Erma Flummerfelt. The family later moved to Ames where she grew to adulthood. Liz married Jim Gauger and they made their home in Ankeny, Ia. and were blessed with two daughters, Kristina and Chelsea.

Mrs. Gauger was a member of the Ankeny First United Methodist Church, Daughters of the Nile, and Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing golf, antiquing, dance competition, cross-country Harley trips, being with her family and friends and life in general. She had a vibrant personality, which through the years, filled the lives of all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her husband Jim; two daughters, Kristina Schaben and husband Jason of Nevada, Ia. and Chelsea of Ames; two grandchildren, Dylan and Samantha Schaben; her parents Dean and Erma of Ames; brother Mike Flummerfelt and wife Diane; father and mother-in-law, John and Margaret Gauger of Ames; sister-in-law Jean Torkildson and husband John of Boone, Ia.; two great aunts, Margaret Flummerfelt of Prineville, Or. and June Flummerfelt of Rogers, Ar.; and several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Liz was preceded in death by her grandparents and an uncle.

A Celebration of Life was led by Rev. Bob Ward at the First United Methodist Church in Ankeny, Ia. Saturday, November 1. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Jesus “Jesse” Carmona – Published November 13, 2008

A tragic accident has taken the young life of former Hugoton resident Jesus “Jesse” Carmona. Mr. Carmona passed from this life Monday, November 3, 2008 at Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck, Ok. at the age of 25.

He was born November 23, 1982 at Satanta, the son of Jesus Manuel Carmona and the former Elfida Guerrero.

Jesus grew up in Hugoton. He was a resident of Ulysses for ten years before moving to Woodward, Ok. in June of 2007. He was employed by Boomer Well Service and Boom Test Service. He was a derrick hand, floor hand and most recently a hydro tester. Jesse enjoyed spending time with his children and working on trucks.

Survivors include his wife Marybel Ayala; two sons, Sergio Jesus Carmona and Adrian Manuel Carmona and two daughters, Arlene Marle Ayala and Anissa Daniela Ayala, all of the home; his mother Maria Guerrero of Hugoton; two brothers, Orlando Carmona of Salina and Noe Carmona of Hugoton; one sister, Lorena Carmona Avalardo of Fort Worth, Tx.; and his grandmothers Josefina Portillo and Manuela Garcia both of Mexico.

Those preceding Mr. Carmona in death were his father and grandfathers, Alfredo Guerrero and Juan Carmona.

Funeral mass was attended Thursday morning, November 6, 2008 at the Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses with Rev. Francis Khoi Nguyen officiating. Interment followed in the Ulysses Cemetery under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Ulysses.

Pat Staats – Published November 13, 2008

Death has claimed the life of Pat M. Staats of Ulysses. Mrs. Staats passed away Tuesday evening, November 4, 2008 at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses. He was 65.

The son of Walter Staats and the former Marna Mark, he was born March 17, 1943 at Stafford.

Pat and Chris E. Hudson were married July 6, 1964 in Sylvia. He graduated from Kansas State University with a Masters Degree in Animal Science. They moved from Natoma to Ulysses December 1, 1968.

He loved his family and enjoyed being with them. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Staats was a member of the United Methodist Church and former member of the Lions Club both of Ulysses. He was owner and manager of River Bend Feed Yard, Staats Truck Line, farms in Reno, Grant and Stevens Counties.

Survivors include his wife Chris E. Staats of Ulysses; son Wade Staats of Ulysses; daughter Gwen Gibson of Lamoni, Ia.; his sister Glenice Dame of Tulsa, Ok.; one granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth Gibson; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were attended Saturday afternoon, November 8, 2008 a the United Methodist Church in Sylvia with Rev. Harry Graves presiding. Burial followed in the Sylvia Cemetery with Grant County Funeral Home of Ulysses in charge of the arrangements.

A memorial has been established for the Mercy, Grace and Truth Ministries of Ulysses. Memorials may be mailed to Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, Ks. 67880.

Terry Stanton – Published November 13, 2008

The death of Terry D. Stanton of Turpin, Ok. has been learned. Mr. Stanton passed away Monday, November 3, 2008 in rural Turpin, Ok.

He was born April 7, 1956 at Iowa City, Ia., the son of Jerry and Mary Scovill Stanton.

Terry graduated from Liberal High School in 1974 and Liberal Area Vo Tech with certification in welding. He was a welder for the Liberal Gas Company for 13 years, since 1990 he was a contract welder.

Mr. Stanton was an avid bass fisherman, a member of B.A.S.S. and Southwest Anglers, he bowled and played baseball for many years.

December 10, 1975, Terry and Kelley S. Wellman were married in Guymon, Ok.

Renetha Abernathy was a companion for many years.

Survivors include his three daughters, Jeni Stanton-Hilliard and husband Jarrett of Albuquerque, N.M.; Kari Stanton of Liberal and Lilly Stanton of Turpin; step daughter Erica Cowan and husband Chad of Wichita; his parents Jerry and Mary Stanton of Montour, Ia.; one brother, Tom Stanton and wife Marlene of Minnesota; sister Helen O’Neil of Hutchinson; and his four grandchildren, Ethan Stanton-Duran, Ashton Garcia, Briana Stanton and Trinity Hilliard.

Memorial services will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Miller Chapel with Rev. Rex Petty presiding.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Terry Stanton Memorial Fund (education of Lilly) in care of Miller Mortuary.

 Edna Faye Brower – Published November 20, 2008

Former Moscow resident Edna Faye Brower passed from this life Friday, November 7, 2008 at Thank Ya Kindly assisted living in Irvine, Ca. where she had resided since September 2006. She was 82.

The daughter of Thomas Jefferson Renfro and Zanada Renfro Kerbow, Edna Faye was born January 10, 1926 in Erick, Ok. After graduating high school in Dierks, Ar., she moved to Hugoton in 1944 and worked for a few years in the dry cleaning shop owned by her mother and stepfather, Zanada and Lewis Kerbow.

December 24, 1946, Edna Faye and Laurence Wilson Brower were united in marriage in Hugoton. After nearly 49 years of marriage, Laurence preceded her in death September 18, 1995. Edna’s parents also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Brower was a full-time homemaker, raising five children on the family farm near Moscow. She was a true helpmate to her husband and role model for her family. She delighted in spending time with all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. An avid reader and an excellent cook and seamstress, she sewed nearly all her children’s clothing, often designing her own patterns.

Edna Faye was a member of the First Christian Church in Hugoton where she taught Sunday school to pre-school children. She was also a member of the Moscow Friendly Neighbors Unit and the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her son John Brower and wife Donna of Moscow; four daughters, LaRonda Soder and husband Dar of Shell Knob, Mo., Deborah Brower of Olathe, Nancy Isenbart and husband Steve of Dodge City and Trish George and husband Dave of Irvine; five grandchildren, Inga Decker and husband Michael, Aidan Soder, Charlene Figger and husband Jason, Zachary George and Tristan George; three great grandchildren, Caitlin Soder, Kassidy Figger and Kieran Decker; her two brothers, Albert Renfro of Garden City and Eddie Kerbow and wife Connie of Hugoton; her Thank Ya Kindly family, Carol, Wayne, Barb, Darrell, Mitch, Alma, Fernando and Marie; and many other loving relatives and friends.

Services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the First Christian Church in Hugoton. Burial will follow in the Hugoton Cemetery under the direction of Paul’s Funeral Home of Hugoton. Friends are invited to call Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established for the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation and for Stevens County Public Transport to support the operation of he senior bus service. Memorial donations may be mailed to Paul’s Funeral Home, Box 236, Hugoton, Ks. 67951.

Joan Darrough – Published November 20, 2008

Word has been received of the death of Joan Darrough of Johnson. Mrs. Darrough passed away Saturday, November 15, 2008 at her home in Johnson. She was 72.

Born December 19, 1935 in Satanta, she was the daughter of Daniel S. Ray and the former Sula Irene Saylors.

Joan attended school at the Hickok School on the hill in rural Grant County until moving to Stanton County in 1945 and then attended Johnson High School, graduating in 1953. She then attended Colorado Women’s College graduating fro there in 1955 with an Associate of Arts Degree in Business.

April 25, 1959, Joan married Kenneth Darrough at Lancaster, Ca.

Mrs. Darrough worked for banks in Denver, Co. and Lancaster, Ca. She also worked with her husband running K&S Meat Processing and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Eastern Star #471.

Survivors include her husband; son Shane Darrough of Dodge City; daughter Kim Darrough-Hayden and husband Sam of Ulysses; her three grandchildren; and four step grandchildren.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Willene and Bernice; and one brother, Little Kenneth.

A celebration of life was attended Tuesday afternoon, November 18, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson with Rev. Don Hasty presiding. Interment followed at the Ulysses Cemetery with burial rites preformed by the Eastern Star #471. Garnand Funeral Home of Johnson was in charge of the arrangements.

Earlon Haney – Published November 20, 2008

The death of Earlon Leslie Haney of Johnson has been learned. Mr. Haney passed away Friday, November 14, 2008 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center / St. Francis Campus in Wichita at the age of 89.

He was born August 24, 1919 in Tishomingo, Ok., the son of George Washington Haney and the former Dolly Hodge.

Earlon grew up in Tishomingo and graduated from Washita Farms High School in rural Johnston County and attended Murray State College. He was a resident of Johnson since 1962 where he retired from farming and ranching.

August 18, 1939, Earlon married Adell Cecil at Coalgate, Ok.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Cecil L.. Haney and wife Dorothy of Salina and William F. Haney and wife Beverley of Johnson; three daughters, Louise Broyles of Ulysses, Shirley M. Gleason and husband Mike of Salina and Barbara L. Wiens and husband Steve of Haysville; and his numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr. Haney is preceded in death by his parents; son Doug Haney; son-in-law Bobby Broyles; three brothers, Ed, Homer and Joe; and sister Mable.

Rev. Dave Kaufmann led the services Tuesday morning, November 18, 2008 at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church in Johnson. Burial followed at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Johnson.

DonEtta Moser – Published November 20, 2008

Stevens County resident DonEtta Moser passed away Friday, November 14, 2008 at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton at the age of 80.

She was born in Stevens County September 28, 1928 the daughter of Perry J. Beavers, a long time Stevens County resident. DonEtta was a 1947 graduate of Hugoton High School.

October 9, 1945, DonEtta and Ernest M. “Dutch” Moser were married. Dutch preceded her in death January 10, 1978.

Mrs. Moser worked at Bigbee Motors for ten years and at Farmers Home Administration USDA for 28 plus years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rebekkah Lodge and the Lady’s Auxiliary all of Hugoton. She had also served on the Stevens County Medical Foundation.

Survivors include her two daughters, Charlotte Breeding and Sherry Morris and husband Greg, all of Hugoton; four grandchildren, Kimberly Simmons and husband Gabriel of Hutchinson, Laurie Morris and Jamie Niehues and husband Brad, all of Hugoton and Gregory Morris of Amarillo, Tx.; one great grandson, Grant Niehues of Hugoton; two nieces, Carolyn Cooper and Phyliss Lober of Colorado Springs, Co.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Beavers of Colorado and Marion Beavers of Missouri; two aunts, Maxine Raimey of Wichita and Maxine Kilbourne of Garden City; and numerous other nieces, nephews and relatives.

Besides her husband, DonEtta was preceded in death by three brothers, Virgil Beavers, Sr., Phil Beavers and Lauren Beavers; and two nephews, Virgil Beavers, Jr. and Arthur Lynn Beavers.

Services were attended Tuesday morning, November 18, 2008 at the United Methodist Church of Hugoton with Pastor Harry Cross and Rev. Eric Mason presiding. Interment was in the Hugoton Cemetery under the direction of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home of Liberal.

John Schippers – Published November 20, 2008

Following a courageous 20-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, John F. Schippers, 78, passed away Friday, November 14, 2008 at Good Samaritan Center in Hays.

He was born January 3, 1930 in Victoria to John M. Schippers and the former Anna C. Kippes. A 1948 graduate of Victoria High School, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War. His entire work career was in the construction industry which included ownership of Pierce-Schippers Construction Company, Inc. and Schippers Construction Co., Inc.

September 1, 1953, John married Armella M. Baier in Victoria.

Mr. Schippers was a member of St. Joseph’s Church of Hays, VFW Post #1751 and the Victoria Knights of Columbus Council.

Survivors include his wife Armella of Hays; daughter Catherine A. Spikes and husband Kirk of Hugoton; three sons, Thomas F. Schippers and wife Rosann of Wichita, Daniel F. Schippers and wife Mary Kay of Hays and John F. Schippers, Jr. and wife Bobbie of Hays; 11 grandchildren, Dr. Leslie Spikes and husband Dr. David Naylor of Kansas City, Dr. Kyle Spikes of Bergen, Norway, and Amanda Spikes of Chicago, Il., Jessica, Matthew and Lucas Schippers all of Wichita; Brent Schippers and wife Sasha and Jared Schippers all of Lawrence, and Chase, Sophia and Pierce Schippers all of Hays; two great grandchildren, Aleah Schippers and Emory Naylor; four brothers, George Schippers of Hays and Lawrence Schippers and wife JoAnn of Springfield, Mo., Paul Schippers and wife Theresa of Victoria and Norman Schippers and wife Lila of The Woodlands, Tx.; four sisters, Sr. Mary Ann Schippers CSA of Hays, Lucy Baler and husband Paul of Hays, Estelle Kuhn of Victoria and Lillian

Leiker of Hays; and his two sisters-in-law, Edna Schippers of Oakley and Marietta Schippers Lies of Wichita.

Mr. Schippers is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Herman Schippers and Arthur Schippers; and an infant sister.

Services were attended Tuesday morning, November 18, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Church in Hays with burial following in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hays was in charge of the arrangements.

Edward Kepley – Published November 20, 2008

Friends and family gathered Monday to remember and honor Edward B. Kepley. Mr. Kepley passed from this life Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton at the age of 94.

He was born October 15, 1914 in Grant County, the son of Edward Austin Kepley and the former Nellie Burr Reynolds.

Ed was a lifetime resident of Grant County except for the last three and a half years he lived at Pioneer Manor.. He attended Golden Grade School and graduated from Grant County Rural High School in 1931.

Mr. Kepley farmed with his dad and brothers. He was a board member for the Golden School, lifetime member and former director of Ulysses Co-op, member of Cropland Co-op, Ulysses Bit & Spur Club, National Rifle Association, Kansas Livestock Association, Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners Association and Southwest Kansas Irrigation Association.

July 31, 1939, Ed and Helen King were united in marriage in Ulysses.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Marshall Kepley and wife Roberta of Hugoton, Jim Kepley and wife Linda of Ulysses and David Kepley and wife Ann of Elgin, Il.; his seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Preceding Mr. Kepley in death were his parents; brothers Ray Kepley and Ralph Kepley; sisters, Bernice Kepley and Nellie Burr Lattimore; and granddaughter Karen Kepley.

Services were attended Monday afternoon, November 17, 2008 at the Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses. Interment followed at the Golden Cemetery of Ulysses under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Ulysses.

Mary Bell Thomson – Published November 20, 2008

Death has claimed the life of Mary Bell Thomson. Mrs. Thomson passed from this life Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Cripple Creek, Co. at the age of 94.

Mary was born July 4, 1914 in Moscow, the daughter of James Elliot and Maryann Dixon Wright.

October 8, 1938 she married Ronald Thomson who precedes her in death. Her parents and siblings Nell Fox and James Elliott also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Thomson is survived by her children, Alan Thomson of Seattle, Wa., Nancy Cathro of Clinton, Md., David Thomson of Peyton and Roni Norman of Cripple Creek; 15 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; her two sisters, Nina Smith of Hugoton and Faye Dewitt of Liberal; and her brother Jerry Wright of Lubbock, Tx.

Cremation has taken place with a memorial service planned for next spring in Moscow.
