The death of Donna L. Moody of Liberal has been learned. Mrs. Moody passed away Thursday, September 11, 2008 at Morton County Care Center of Elkhart. She was 78.
Born March 24, 1930 in Sublette, she was the daughter of Forest Trahern and the former Dorothy Wallace.
Donna attended school at Moscow and Liberal. She owned and operated the Wedding Arch Bridal Store in Liberal.
In 1947 Donna and Robert E. McGuire were married. She married Chet Winkleman in December of 1964.
November 12, 1983, Donna and Richard Moody were married in Colorado Springs, Co. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include her three daughters, Donetta Smith of Aurora, Co., Rhonda McGuire McCommons of Elkton, Md and Roberta “Jeanie” Sparks of Riverton, Wy.; two brothers, Dale Trahern and wife Betty of Rifle, Co. and Dick Trahern and wife Barbara of Turpin, Ok.; two sisters, Guylene Stoddard of Overland Park and Lorene Reever of Liberal; three grandchildren, Getana Dixon and Mark and John McCommons; her two great granddaughters, Alyssa and Aubrey Dixon.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, September 14, 2008 at the Miller Chapel with Rev. Tim Britain presiding. Interment followed in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Guymon Home Hospice or to the Diabetes Association in care of Miller Mortuary.
Death has claimed the life of Billie Jean Collins. Mrs. Collins passed from this life Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart at the age of 69.
She was born November 14, 1938 at Syracuse, the daughter of Arlyn Raney and the former Ruby McGehee.
Billie Jean attended the Elkhart schools. For 20 years, she worked as a cook for the Elkhart Grade School. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.
September 24, 1955, Billie Jean married Dave Collins in Elkhart.
Survivors include her husband Dave; three daughters, Tammy Emmert and husband Mike and Laura Collins, all of and Teresa Dwiggins and husband Rick of Oklahoma City, Ok.; her brother Larry Raney of Hugoton; four sisters, Beverly Tuman of Hugoton, Janice Williams of Pratt and Sandra Gilbert and Kerri Bennett both of Elkhart; her four grandchildren, Tausha Espinoza, Devi Pedrazine, Beau Line and Jamie Hudgins; and five great grandchildren, Jalen and Emmitt Espinoza and Keon, Devin and Jaden Voisin.
Billie Jean is preceded in death by her parents.
Services were attended Friday morning, September 12, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Elkhart with Rev. Tim Lapp officiating. Burial followed at the Elkhart Cemetery under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Elkhart.

Longtime Hugoton resident Bronislawa “Bonnie” Collins passed from this life Sunday, September 14, 2008 at her daughter’s home in Hugoton at the age of 78.
The daughter of Peter Kulpanis and the former Bronislawa Modzes, she was born June 2, 1930 in Patterson, NJ.
She served her country in the United Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
September 14, 1954, Bonnie and LeRoy K. Collins were married in Omaha, Ne. They moved from Syracuse to Hugoton in 1956. Leroy preceded Bonnie in death February 4, 2007. Her parents; one infant son, Stephen Peter Collins; six brothers; and two sisters also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Collins was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church, the Altar Society of Hugoton and the Hugoton American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include one son, Tony D. Collins of Aurora, Co.; her daughter Sharon L. Concannon and husband Don of Hugoton; one sister, Helen Shaplola of Colonia, NJ.; one grandson, Dustin Collins; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral mass was attended Wednesday morning, September 16, 2008 at St. Helen Catholic Church in Hugoton with Father Paschal Kleine presiding. Military graveside services were conducted by the Vets Group of Hugoton in the Hugoton Cemetery. Paul’s Funeral Home of Hugoton was in charge of the arrangements.

Former Hugoton resident, Donna V. Gregg of Wilburton, Ok. passed from this life Friday, June 20, 2008 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Ok. She was 78.
Donna was born in Hugoton April 6, 1930 to John Burrows and the former Edith Wilson.
She worked as a cook in a nursing home and was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include her daughter Kathy Warren and husband Jerry of Wilburton; son Jay Gregg and wife Ruby of Poteau, Ok.; one brother, Verle Burrows of Kansas; her 12 grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.
Mrs. Gregg was preceded in death by her parents; sister Wilda Martin; daughter Marsha Cooper; and an infant son.
Services were attended at the Bob Wilson Memorial Chapel June 25, 2008 in Wilburton with Rev. Jim White officiating. Interment was in Centerpoint Cemetery of Wilburton under the direction of Waldrop Funeral Home of Wilburton.
Friends and family gathered Wednesday to remember Geraldine M. “Gerry” Cowen of Lakin. Mrs. Cowen passed away Monday, September 15, 2008 at Western Plains Medical complex in Dodge City. She was 85.
Born September 26, 1922 in Arkansas City, she was the daughter of Gerald Allen Maib and the former Faye Catherine Gaskill. She grew up and attended schools in Wichita. In 1940 she graduated from North High School in Wichita.
March 23, 1948, Gerry married Hugh A. Cowen in Wichita.
The lived in various places throughout Kansas and Colorado due to Hugh’s career in education. They lived in Wichita before moving to Minneapolis and then to Lebonon. In 1958 they moved to Lakin coming to Hugoton in 1964 where they lived for eight years. They then moved to Greeley, Co., Coffeyville, Wichita, Salina and finally back to Lakin in 1986.
A homemaker, Gerry worked in various other jobs. She enjoyed playing bridge, sports, crossword puzzles and reading. She was a member of many organizations including the United Methodist Church in Lakin where she volunteered her time with many church activities; PEO, OES where she served as a Past Matron; Kearny County Cancer Society; served on the Lakin City Council for eleven years; Kearny County Senior Center and Numerous bridge clubs.
Survivors include her son Kelly Cowen and wife Jatrice Cowen of Hotchkiss, Co.; two daughters, Candis Hale and husband Waldo of Lakin and Cathy Flummerfelt and husband Doug of Shenandoah, Ia.; her ten grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Maib.
Services were attended Wednesday afternoon, September 17, 2008 at the Lakin United Methodist Church with Rev. Tod Anthony officiating. Burial followed in the Lakin Cemetery under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Lakin.

Word has been received of the death of Henry Robert smith of Moscow. Mr. Smith, formerly of Pocahontas, Ar., passed away Monday, September 15, 2008 at his daughter’s home at the age of 71.
Born August 15, 1937 at Hoxie, Ar., he was the son of Walter Kelly Smith and the former Margie Elizabeth Bowers.
December 11, 1965, Henry and Judith Ann Anderson were married in Rockford, Il. He moved to Moscow one month ago to be near his daughter.
Mr. Smith loved his family and enjoyed being with them. He was an electrician in a factory. His hobbies were gardening, remodeling homes and building bird houses.
Survivors include his wife Judith Ann Smith of Moscow; three daughters, Susan Elizabeth McLeod of Tarpon Springs, Fl., Sharon Valerie Persinger of Moscow and Anna Rachel Smith of Tarpon Springs, Fl; his brother Alin “Pat” Smith of Rockford; four grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Those preceding Mr. Smith in death are his parents; two brothers, Willis and Merle Smith; and three sisters, Irene Miller, Aline Moore and Mary Nation.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at a later date. Paul’s Funeral Home of Hugoton is in charge of the arrangements.
Mourners gathered September 15 to honor David Alan Gormley of Garden City. Mr. Gormley passed from this life Tuesday, September 9, 2008 in Finney County at the age of 49.
The son of Walter LeRoy Gormley, Jr. and the former Mary Katherine Gilleland, David was born February 27, 1959 in Pampa, Tx.. He grew up as a child in Dighton and attended Dighton Schools.
Throughout his life David lived in various places before living n Houston, Tx. and Caladonia, Ms. Since 2006 he had made his home in the Garden City and Holcomb area.
A mechanic and transmission specialist, David enjoyed fishing, his dog and tinkering with cars and old motorcycles.
Survivors include his two sons Zachary Gormley and Lance Gormley both of Newton; one daughter, Marah Gormley of Orange, Tx.; two brothers, Mark Rasp of Topeka and Chris Rasp of Caladonia; his two sisters, Joy Peck of Dighton and Toni Ostmeyer of Hugoton; and two grandsons.
Memorial services were attended Monday afternoon, September 15, 2008 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev. Paul Klaus officiating. A private burial is planned for a later date.

Friends and family members gathered Friday to remember James Dee “J.D.” Johnson of Tahlequah, Ok. Mr. Johnson passed from this life Monday, September 15, 2008 at the age of 80.
The son of Charley Johnson and the former Lucy Cochran, he was born July 27, 1928 in Stilwell, Ok.
When J.D. was only eight years old his mother passed away. He attended Sequoyah School. Upon graduating, he served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950 until 1952. After receiving his honorable discharge, J.D. attended Bacon College and Northeastern State University, from 1952 until 1957, graduating with his bachelor of science in industrial arts and his master in education administration. During this time he served as the principal at Rocky Ford Elementary School.
Starting in 1960 he taught math in Gallup, N. M. and later industrial arts in Tulsa, Ok. From 1966 till 1968 J.D. served as the director of the Cherokee Hills Skill Center in Stillwater. In 1968, J.D. accepted the post of deputy principal chief during the term of Principal Chief Keeler and worked to set up the formation of the Cherokee Nation. H assisted in setting up health programs, the housing authority, as well as Cherokee Nation Industries.
Mr. Johnson served as chairman of the constitutional revision committee and assisted in forming community representatives. He was proud of his people and worked diligently as the chairman of Oklahoma Indian Affairs and the special assistant to Secretary of Agriculture, Earl Butts.
In 1976 J.D. married the love of his life, Betty Aline Hemphill in Miami, Ok.
From 1977 to 1992 he worked as a field auditor for the Oklahoma Tax Commission in Oklahoma City, Ok. and in 1993 he formed the J.D. Johnson Construction Company where he worked to renovate low-cost housing in northeastern Oklahoma. J.D. was a 50-year member of the Cherokee Masonic Lodge No. 10.
When not working he loved fiddling, judging fiddling contests and making most anything from wood in his backyard workshop. But his favorite activity was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren He loved to take them fishing or spend the afternoon just talking.
Mr. Johnson attended the First Baptist Church of Tahlequah and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife Betty of the home; two children, Sandy Gillespie and husband Dennis of Jefferson, Tx. and Steven Rollins of Denver, Co.; three brothers, Henry of Denver and Sammie Joe and Kenny Johnson both of Stilwell; two sisters, Mary Jane and Ed Limore of Stilwell and Violet Still of Gore, Ok.; four grandchildren, Mindy Branch and husband Chuck of McKenney, Tx., Gina Downey and husband Steve of Ford, Diane Porter and husband Jim of Hugoton and Christopher Gillespie and wife Kristy of Montezuma; and his great grandchildren, Mia, Kalin and Emma Branch, Claire and Colton Downey, Gracie and C.J. Porter, Marshall and Glenn Gillespie, Justin Dodson, Dayne Dodson and wife Chelsea, Jonathan, Steven and Michael White and Rhianna Webb.
Mr. Johnson is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Junior Johnson; and a special grandson, Jon White.
