Former Hugoton Chief of Police, Donald Lewis Brown of Washington Court House, Ohio, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2008 at his residence at the age of 69. He had been in failing health.
He was born March 2, 1938 in Fayette County, Ohio to Harvey Buell and Edith Catherine Johnson Brown. He lived many years in Stevens County before returning to Fayette County in 2001.
Mr. Brown was a graduate of the Ohio and Kansas Peace Officers Basic Training Schools and was a 20-year veteran in the field of law enforcement. For 14 years he served as Chief of Police in Hugoton, making him the longest serving chief in Hugoton history.
A member of the National Association of Chiefs of Police; Don was also a member of the Kansas Peace Officers Association; the Five State Peace Officers Association of which he was past president and Kansas vice president; and the National Rifle Association.
Don was a private pilot and a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. From 1955 to 1959 he was an airplane mechanic in the United States Air Force.
Survivors include his son Chris L. Brown of Bainbridge; a daughter and son-in-law, Nikki and James Dunn of Greenfield, Oh.; five grandchildren, Colton Raypole and wife Emily, Michaela Ingles and husband Curtis, Shiloh Hottinger and husband Derek and Kaylie and Jordan Twarek; and three great grandchildren, Macy Lynn, Briannah and Abbigail.
Funeral services were attended Wednesday morning, February 6, 2008 at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington C.H. with Rev. Todd Ernst, pastor at the Grace Baptist Church in Greenfield, officiating. Burial followed in Good Hope Cemetery.
Death has claimed the life of Wayne D. Prather of Garber, Ok. Mr. Prather passed from this life Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at the Living Center in Enid, Ok. at the age of 84.
He was the son of Walter Scott Prather and the former Marie Venus Hawk. He was born May 31, 1923 in Hugoton.
Wayne and Edith Allen were married May 16, 1954 in Dumas, Tx.
Mr. Prather was a diesel mechanic and superintendent who worked for Parker Drilling in Kenya, Africa, Singapore, China and New Zealand as well as other areas of the world.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Garber where he was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the choir and a fill-in song leader. Wayne enjoyed playing his guitar and harmonica, horseback riding and visiting.
Survivors include his four sons, Larry Prather of Kansas City, Mo., Stuart Prather of Denver, Co. and Carl Carpenter and Dewayne Carpenter both of Texas; one brother, Walter Scott Prather of Woodward, Ok.; two sisters, Daisy Pate of Hugoton and Venus Marie Easley of Enid; 12 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and special caregiver and friend Debra Medlin.
Preceding Mr. Prather in death were his parents; wife Edith; thee sisters, Geneva Holder, Fern Pate and Irene Holt; and two brothers, Cleo Prather and Alfred Prather.
Funeral services were attended Sunday afternoon, February 3, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Garber, Ok. with Pastor Tom LeGrand officiating. Interment followed in the Garber Cemetery under the direction of Dugger Funeral Home of Garber.

The death of David “Joe” Williamson is being mourned. Joe passed from this life Monday, February 4, 2008 at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton at the age of 63.
He was born June 23, 1944 in Elkhart the son of Robert Williamson and the former Irene Millemon.
Joe graduated from Rolla High School. He enlisted in the Navy when he was 17 years old serving for three years. In 1962 he served two years in Japan in the Communications department and one year in Vietnam on the USS Princeton.
Mr. Williamson worked for his sister Kathy and her husband Mike Willis on the farm driving a grain cart during harvest. Before his stroke in March of 2006 he was dedicated to caring for his mother. Since 2006 he has lived in Hugoton at Sunflower Plaza with assistance from The Center for Independent Living and was diagnosed with cancer two and a half weeks ago. Joe love to mow yards, clean cars, paint, chew tobacco, watch old movies and tell jokes. He also enjoyed taking care of stray animals.
July 22, 1969, Joe married Un Young Chung in Liberal. They later divorced.
Survivors include two sisters, Kathy Willis and husband Mike and Judy Lynch and husband Roger all of Hugoton; her nephew Warren Willis and wife Amanda and their family, Zackery and Thomas of Hugoton; four nieces, Jennifer Donaldson and husband Jyrel, their family, Justin, Jacob and Jenna of Maple Hill, Lisa Willis of Hugoton, JoHanna Goetzinger and husband David, their family, Logan and Shiloh of Fort Dix, N.J.. and Shenna Lynch of Wichita; and a host of friends and family.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 8, 2008 at the First Christian Church in Hugoton with Dr. Leroy Herder officiating.

Death has claimed the life of Katheryn “Hadean” Fink of Morton County. Mrs. Fink passed from this life Monday, February 4, 2008 at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart at the age of 75.
She was born February 8, 1932 at Perth, the daughter of John Hull and the former Sarah Lane.
Hadean was a lifetime Morton County resident graduating from Rolla High School. She was the head cashier at First State Bank in Elkhart for 46 years.
September 13, 1954 Hadean married Phillip D. Fink in Tucumcari, N.M.
Mrs. Fink has been a lifetime member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and served on Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners Association Board. She enjoyed reading, cooking, and hosting family dinners.
Survivors include her husband; son Phillip Fink and wife Linda of Elkhart; two daughters, Sarita Blakeley and Salena Hurn and husband Craig, all of Elkhart; one brother, John A. Hull of Oregon; one sister, Betty Bookstore of Elkhart; her eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Hadean is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Collins and Gertrude Collins; and son-in-law Lindon Blakeley.
Funeral mass was attended Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Elkhart with Rev. Francis Khoi Nguyen officiating. Burial followed in the Elkhart Cemetery under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Elkhart.

The death of Harley M. Wyatt of Clifton, Co. has been learned. Mr. Wyatt passed from this life Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at his home at he age of 86.
He was born to David and Sallie Wyatt at Paonia, Co., February 25, 1921.
July 15, 1942, Harley and Ina Phillips were married in Delta, Co. Four children came to bless this union. Ina preceded Harley in death May 13, 1998. He married Helen Simpson in 1999.
Harley was a heavy equipment specialist working several years in Delta, then moving to Grand Junction, Co. where he was employed for Moore Implement Company until retirement.
Mr. Wyatt served in the European Theatre during World War II for most of four years. Serving all that time with no leave, his son Harley “Butch” was nearly four years old when they first met after the war.
Survivors include his wife Helen; two daughters, Peggy Drost of San Diego, Ca. and Becky Hamilton of Centralia, Mo.; his son Harley “Butch” Wyatt of Delta; four brothers, George Wyatt of Grand Junction, Hubert Wyatt of Greenwood, Mo., Earl Wyatt of Bolivar, Mo. and Calvin Wyatt of Hotchkiss, Co.; two sisters, Peggy Brecheisen of Hugoton and Marjorie Hamblin of Muskogee, Ok.; seven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and seven great great-grandchildren.
Besides his first wife, Harley was also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; three sisters; and one baby daughter, Susan.
Memorial services were attended at United Methodist Church in Cedaredge, Co. with Calvin Wyatt presiding. Burial was in Cedaredge Cemetery with military honors under the direction of Martin Mortuary of Grand Junction.
Harley was a veteran of World War II “40th Engineers” - Member: Company A, National Association.
Death has claimed the life of Neal C. Lahey of Ulysses. Mr. Lahey passed from this life Monday, February 18, 2008 at his home. He was 85.
Neal was born September 11, 1922 in Ulysses, the son of James. F. Lahey and the former Mabel E. Carter. His family moved to Washington State in the 1930’s.
In 1943, after graduating from Bellevue, Washington High School and working as a machinist, he was inducted into the United States Army Air Force. He proudly served his country during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam wars retiring after 25 years as a Senior Master Sergeant.
Mr. Lahey continued his career by working for Boeing and Richard Bennett Elementary School. In 1974 Neal and his family moved from Redmond, Wa. to Ulysses. He worked as a service technician at the local Gambles store until retiring in 1987.
Neal’s hobbies included gardening, fishing, traveling, woodworking and KU basketball. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79, Masonic Lodge #435, The Scottish Rite, and OES Chapter #471 all of Ulysses.
July 22, 1956 Neal married Mary Annabel “Anne” Hickok at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses. She preceded him in death January 3, 2001. His parents and sister Geraldine “Gerry” Lahey also preceded him in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn A. Summers and husband Robert of Bakersfield, Ca. and Mary M. “Meg” Lahey of Ulysses; five grandchildren, Trenton and wife Jennifer, Kathryn “Katie”, Daniel, Annabel and Abigail Summers all of Bakersfield; and his two sisters, Marylee Ellis and husband Jay of Juneau, Ak. and Sheila Mattick and husband Bill of Bellevue, Wa.
A private memorial service will be scheduled for a future date. Garnand Funeral Home of Ulysses is in charge of the arrangements.
Lifelong Stevens County resident Larry Gene Mantzke passed from this life Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at his home in rural Stevens County. He was 66.
The son of Frank A. Mantzke and the former Mollie M. Nichols, he was born April 24, 1941 in Hugoton.
Larry married Julia Ann “DeDe” Edison in 1961. One son, Craig Mantzke came to bless this union. Larry and DeDe were later divorced.
Mr. Mantzke worked for Panhandle Eastern Gas Company out of Hugoton for many years up until his retirement. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Hugoton.
A K-State fan, Larry also loved to play pool, hunt and dance. He collected knives and guns.
Survivors include his son Craig of Hugoton; brother Frankie Mantzke of Ft. Smith, Ar.; sister-in-law Doris Mantzke of Hugoton; two brothers-in-law, Norman Traver of Hugoton and Rocky Colella of Longmont, Co.; and his many nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
Those preceding Larry in death were his parents Frank and Mollie Mantzke; one brother, Verl Mantzke; and three sisters, Treva Mantzke, Phyllis Traver and Francine Colella.
Funeral services were attended Saturday afternoon, February 16, 2008 at the First Christian Church in Hugoton with Jeremiah Moats presiding. Burial followed in the Hugoton Cemetery under the direction of Paul’s Funeral Home of Hugoton.

Former Hugoton High School Principal, Richard Everett “Dick” Williams passed from this life Saturday, February 16, 2008 in Mesa, Az. at the age of 77.
He was born March 1, 1930 in McCune to Audra and Rev. J. Richard Williams.
Dick attended and played football at Washburn University in Topeka where he completed his BS in Education and continued his education with a MS degree in Education Administration from Emporia State University.
Mr. Williams began his public school service in Centralia in 1950 and was principal of the elementary and junior high school in Belleville from 1953 until 1962. He was the high school principal in Hugoton from 1962 until 1972 and completed his career as principal of the middle school in Willcox, Arizona from 1973 until his retirement in 1992.
His passion for education continued as he was elected to the Willcox School Board to continue his positive impact on education. Dick will be remembered for his love and intense desire to prepare young people to become productive members or our society. His decisions as a leader in education were always based on “doing the right thing” for the students.
An avid horseman, Dick owned and bred some of the finest Quarter Horses in the country. His amazing knowledge of bloodlines and his immense equine wisdom was revered by all of his fellow horsemen. He attended school for, and became a Master Ferrier and spent countless hours shoeing horses with special attention to building corrective shoes for individual horses.
Dick also had a special love for all kinds of music and spent many hours singing in Methodist church choirs and singing solos in countless weddings and funerals. Whenever possible, Dick loved to listen to a good Barbershop quartet or some Big Band music.
Mr. Williams loved family and his fellow man and will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. He loved to spend hours telling and listening to stories with friends and family over a good cup of coffee..
Survivors include his two sons, Kent and wife Sylvia of Tulsa, Ok. and Kyle and wife Denise of Wichita Falls, Tx.; granddaughters Erin and Emma of Tulsa, Ok. and Jessica of Wichita Falls; grandson Dylan of Wichita Falls; loving mother of Kent and Kyle, Joan Williams of Wichita Falls; and friend and companion Susan Borski of Mesa.
There will be a memorial service celebrating Dick’s life at 2:00 p.m., March 8, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Willcox, Az. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dick Williams Memorial Fund at the United Methodist Church in Willcox, PO Box 307, Willcox, Arizona 35644.
Dick’s wishes were to donate his body to science so that further advancements might be made in the cure for pulmonary fibrosis. A graveside service will take place later in Osage City. Date to be announced.
Former Hugoton businessman and State Senator Leroy Hayden passed away Friday, February 22, 2008 at the Satanta District Hospital at the age of 81.
The son of Austin Joseph Hayden and the former Goldie Irene Schonlaw, Leroy was born July 31, 1927 in Satanta where he was a lifetime resident.
Mr. Hayden served in the United States Navy during World War II, worked for the United Carbon Company in Ryus and owned and operated Hayden Clothiers of Satanta, Sublette, Johnson and Hugoton. For 16 years Leroy served as a Kansas State Senator of the Thirty-Ninth District.
Mr. Hayden was a member of the Satanta American Legion Post No. 276, was a Life Member of the V.F.W. and was a past member of the Satanta Chamber of Commerce. In 2007 he received the Senior Citizen of the Year Award.
April 18, 1958, Leroy and Mavis (Gray) Barker were married. Together they raised a family of six children.
Many will remember Leroy as an enthusiastic sports official who refereed basketball and football games throughout the area for many years. He had a zeal for life, never met a stranger, and gave generously and kindly to family, friends and community.
Survivors include his wife Mavis of Satanta; four sons, Steve Barker and wife Jody of Satanta, Gary Barker and wife Mary of Hugoton, Michael and Jeanne of Chicago, Il. and Shawn Hayden and wife Blanche of Satanta; two daughters, Marsha Flummerfelt of Ulysses and Robyn Young and husband Cass of Wichita; 13 grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Mr. Hayden was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Genevieve Duck and Maxine Hayden; and great granddaughter Erin Anton.
Ministers Randy Dirrum and Ray Tweed led the services for Mr. Hayden Tuesday morning, February 26, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Satanta. Military graveside services were conducted by the Satanta American Legion Post No. 276 at the Dudley Township Cemetery. Haskell County Funeral Home of Sublette was in charge of the arrangements.

Death has taken the life of little Aidan Rey Renteria of Elkhart. He passed from this life Friday, February 22, 2008 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center - St Francis Campus in Wichita.
Aidan was born October 22, 2004 in Garden City, the son of Robert Renteria and the former Stephanie Fink.
An Elkhart resident, he loved to play with his playstation and Nintendo Wii. He loved the color green, hunting, farming and tractors. Aidan also enjoyed helping Grandma do her business, playing with cars and his best friend Rowdy the dog. He was a very smart child for his age and the light of life to all who knew him.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his parents Robert and Stephanie Renteria of Elkhart; brother Juan Diego Renteria of Texas; his grandparents, Phillip and Linda Fink of Elkhart, Guillerma Renteria of Portales, N.M. and Juan Renteria of Portales; great grandfather Phillip D. Funk of Elkhart; great grandmother Margurita Renteria; great great-grandma Thomasa Salazar; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were attended Wednesday morning, February 27, 2008 at the First Church of God in Elkhart with Rev. Gary Murrell officiating. Burial followed in the Elkhart Cemetery under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Elkhart.

The death of Max N. Scott of Elkhart has been learned. Mr. Scott passed away Friday, February 22, 2008 at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart at the age of 86.
He was born July 1, 1921 in Randall, the son of Bert Scott and the former Verne Wildman.
Max moved to Elkhart in 1976 from Eastern Colorado. He was co-founder of Scott Power and Machine Inc., in Elkhart where he was a mechanic. Mr. Scott served in the Army air Corps in Europe during World War II. He enjoyed working and visiting with farmers.
December 24, 1945 he married Marjorie Beck in Garden City. She preceded him in death July 5, 2002. His parents; two sisters, Ruth Cain and Kathleen Graffis; and his brother Bob all preceded him in death also.
Survivors include his four sons, Ron Scott and Tom Scott and wife Annette all of Elkhart, Dave Scott and wife Patty of Hereford, Tx. and Bill Scott and wife Linda of Colorado Springs, Co.; one sister, Lois Oplinger of Jewell; his six grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.
Services were attended Monday morning, February 25, 2008 at the First Church of god in Elkhart with Rev. Gary Murrell presiding. Burial followed in the Satanta Cemetery with American Legion conducting burial rites. Garnand Funeral Home of Elkhart was in charge of the arrangements.
